An atom contains same number of protons as well as electrons which makes it neither positively charged nor negatively charged. Hence, atom is neutral as a whole

According to Thomson’s model of an atom

(i) An atom consists of a positively charged sphere and the electrons are embedded in it,

(ii) The negative and positive charges are equal in magnitude. So the atom is electrically neutral.
