Bholi or sulekha, the main character of the story, is a simpleton and has black-pockmarks on her body. As a child she was neglected by her family who gave up on her thinking that she would never find a suitable match. As a matter of chance, Bholi was sent to school where she met her saviour. Her teacher encouraged her, educated her and transformed her into a courageous and dignified young girl. Sulekha refused to marry bishamber when he asked her father for dowry. She was self-reliant and respectful towards her parents. She decided to work in the school and sustain herself and take care of her parents in their old age. sulekha is, in every sense, a winner.
