Hasan was a serang in a ship in which the author Dr A J Cronin was traveling from Liverpool to Calcutta. He was an ugly looking person with a really large head and short legs. Throughout the trip, he maintained a squatting position. When there was an outbreak of smallpox on board, Hasan did not for a minute hesitate to attend to the sick. Later, when the author offered him a monetary compensation, Hasan gently declined the offer saying he had no use for money as he had all that he needed.Hassan was the muslim boy in the ship who was serang.
