Peter Van Daan was the Teenage son of the Van Dans whose real name was Peter Van Pels. He was 16 years old. Anne first saw Peter as Obnoxious, lazy and hypersensitive and misjudged him but later they both become close friends. Peter was a quiet , timid and honest boy who was sweet to Anne. He was thoughtful, sensitive, sensible and observant different from his loud and brash parents. During their time in the Annexe Anne and Peter developed a romantic attraction which he was very fond of reading books and especially if they were meant for adult reading. Once he hid in the loft to read one such book and got so engrossed in reading that he forget to come down for dinner. His father came up to call him and hit him hard when he found him reading the book. He refused to eat dinner that night.
Peter Van Daan was stubborn and disobedient boy at the start of the book. He spends most of the time in the attic. He does not do any physical work and is unafraid. But later on Anne is disappointed with Peter as he is weak minded, does not like religion and takes the easy part in life rather than one of work and personal growth. He is just a passive guy.
