Electromagnetic waves are propagated by oscillating electric and magnetic fields oscillating at right angles to each other.Electromagnetic waves travel with a constant velocity of  3 x 108 ms-1 in vacuum.
the waves are not deflected by electric or magnetic field.
the waves can show interference or diffraction.
the waves are transverse waves.
the waves may be polarized.
Electromagnetic waves need no medium of propagation. The energy from the sun is received by the earth through electromagnetic waves.

characteristics of EM waves:-)

  • em waves are associated with electric and magnetic field which are perpendicular to each other and direction of waves
  • speed of EM waves is equals to speed of light.
  • I can travel in welcome that means that does not require any medium.
  • spectrum of EM waves is arrangement of different rays in increasing order of their wavelength or decreasing order of frequency.

limitations of EM waves :-)

  • does not explain phenomenon of black body effect
  • it does not explain phenomenon of Photoelectric effect .
  • does not explain about line spectrum of hydrogen .
