Meaning they can fix a lot of carbon dioxide and make a lot of biomass rather rapidly (bloom). They are also heavy, so they tend to sink from the ocean's surface layer (where there is light) to the dark layers, where the organic matter that makes up their bodies is less likely to be broken down and returned back to carbon dioxide. This represents a net sequestration of carbon.
