as chlorine ( Cl ) exists in two isotopic forms Cl - 35 and Cl - 37 , but its mass is 35. 5.

let us take x be the fraction of ( Cl 37) in ( Cl 35.5)

Cl 35 = ( 1 - x )

now :

37 x + 35 ( 1 - x ) = 35.5

37 x + 35 x - 35 = 35.5

2x - 35 = 35.5

2x - 35.5 + 35 = 0

2 x - 0.5 = 0

2x = 0.5

x = 0.5/2

x = 0.25

hence , 25 % of cl 37

ratio = 3:1

average atomic mass = ( 35*3) + (37*1 )

1 + 3

= 142 / 4

= 35.5
