Question :

Choose the correct option :

The price of CNG is increased by 25% by the government A car owner tries to cut down

on his CNG consumption by various means such as car pooling, using public transport etc.

By how much % should the car owner decrease his consumption of CNG, in order to

maintain the same budget for using his car for commuting. Ignore other expenses such as

maintenance of car etc .

  • 25%
  • 30%
  • 50%
  • 20%

Answer :

The last option is correct.

The required % is 20 %

Given :

Percentage of increase of price of CNG by government = 25%

To find :

% by which the car owner should decrease his consumption of CNG , in order to maintain the same budget for using his car for commuting

Solution :

Let the price of x m^3 CNG be Rs.100

Increase in price = 25%

New price = 25%100 + 100

= 25 + 100

=125

For Rs.125 , CNG obtained = x m^3

For Rs.100 , CNG obtained = (x/125) × 100

= 4x/5 m^3

Decrease in consumption = x - 4x/5

= (5x-4x)/5

=x/5

Therefore, required % of decrease in consumption

= ( (x/5)/x ) × 100

= 100/5

= 20

Hence, % by which the car owner should decrease his consumption of CNG , in order to maintain the same budget for using his car for commuting is 20%.
