the nucleus in a call that's not dividing has a long network of nucleoprotein known as the chromatin . This chromatin gets converted into chromosomes in a cell that's dividing. The chromosomes contain a primary constriction known as the centomere,on the sides of which 2 disc shaped structures known as kinetochores are present.Depending on location of the centromere the chromosomes are divided into 3 categories viz.☆metacentric☆submetacentric☆acrocentric☆telocentric . Besides the the centromere all the chromosomes have 2 sister arms one from each parent. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus of each and every cell except the gametes which have only 23 chromosomes. The chromosomes contain the genetic material in the form of DNA.
