This is a simple replacement reaction, and occurs because chlorine is below iiodine in group VIIA.
It is also an oxidation, reduction reaction.
2 KI(aq) + 2e --> I2(g) (oxid.)
Cl2 (g) - 2e --> 2 Cl-(aq) (redn)
2 KI (aq) + Cl2(g) --> 2 KCl(aq) + I2(g)
It is also an oxidation, reduction reaction.
2 KI(aq) + 2e --> I2(g) (oxid.)
Cl2 (g) - 2e --> 2 Cl-(aq) (redn)
2 KI (aq) + Cl2(g) --> 2 KCl(aq) + I2(g)
