1. Copper vessels aquire a greenish coating of Copper Oxide on them whe exposed to air for long. So, when we rub them with lemon juice, a neutralization reaction takes place between the citric acid and basic Copper Oxide which results in a formation of a salt which is washed away with water

2. When an ant bites, formic acid is injected to the skin, to neutralize the effect of this acid, we apply baking soda (NaHCO3) which reacts with the formic acid.

3. In our stomach their is HCl is present. Whenever we have indigestion, the amount of HCl increases causing acidity. To get relief, we take a mild base called Milk of Magnesia which contains mild Mg(OH)2, it neutralises the effect of excess HCl present in the stomach.

WHAT IS NEUTRALIZATION REACTION...???

  • The reaction in which a base reacts with an acid is called neutralization reaction.

Examples :

  • NaOH ( aq ) + HCL ( aq ) ------------->  NaCl ( aq ) + H₂O ( l )

  • H₂SO₄ ( aq ) + 2NH₄OH ( aq ) ---------------> ( NH₄)₂SO₄( aq ) + 2H₂O

THREE PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF NEUTRALIZATION

REACTION :

i) Antacids are used for neutralization reaction antacid is a mild base.

ii) Tooth pastes are basic in nature which neutralize the acid in the mouth.

iii) Farmers add an alkali to neutralize the acidic soil and in this way the soil pH is controlled.
