Hi ,

Let the Gagan marks in math = x

Marks in English = 45 - x

According to the problem given ,

If he got 1 more mark in math and

1 less mark in English ,

New marks would be,

Math = ( x + 1 )

English = ( 45 - x - 1 )

= 44 - x

Product of marks = 500

( x + 1 ) ( 44 - x ) = 500

44x - x² + 44 - x = 500

x² - 43x + 456 = 0

x² - 24x - 19x + 24 × 19 = 0

x( x - 24 ) - 19( x - 24 ) = 0

( x - 24 ) ( x - 19 ) = 0

x - 24 = 0 or x - 19 = 0

x = 24 or x = 19

Now ,

Gagan math marks = x = 24
English marks = 45 - 24 = 21

Or

Gagans math marks = x = 19

English marks = 45 - x = 45 -19

= 26
