Classification of farmers based on landholding in India

Based on the size of the landholding, the farmers in India are classified as:

  1. Marginal – less than 1 hectare
  2. Small – 1-2 hectare
  3. Semi-medium – 2-4 hectare
  4. Medium – 4-10 hectare
  5. Large – 10 hectare and above
  • According to the agricultural census of India, an operational landholding is defined as the “techno-economic unit used “wholly or partly” for the production of agricultural and operated by ‘one person alone’.
  • It includes any unit that is used in farm production including poultry, pisciculture, and livestock rearing.
  • Depending upon the ‘size of the landholding’, the farmers are classified as above in order to segregate them as beneficiaries for central and state government farmer welfare schemes and also for various other administrative reasons.
