The French-Canadian priest Gaston Roberge was very impressed with Apu Trilogy and after watching the movie he came to Calcutta. Both of them had a lasting friendship. They had elaborate discussions on various aspects of films and set up 'Chitrabani', a communication and film institute as Ray was an icon of Indian cinema at that time. Gaston Roberge in his book Satyajit Ray Essays gives a detailed analysis of Ray's work and his greatness as a person as well as an artist. In his youth, he associated Bengal with Tagore, Mother Teresa. Roberge also talks that it was not the material poverty that struck him but it was the spiritual poverty of many rich people. He said that he came here because of his quest to know the world and in that process to know himself.
