Not only clowns, there's a popular thinking that every type of comedians must have had a sad past.

A contradictory belief is known as SAD CLOWN PARADOX.

It says that the people that tend to make laugh others , have suffered sadness in early ages and so their brain makes them do things that make laugh others to make themselves happy and use this as an escape from their lonely life.
