Co-ordinate of point L on a number line is – 5. Find the co-ordinates of points on the

number line which are at a distance of 10 units from point L.

Solution:

Let point M be at a distance of 10 units from L and on left side of L

Let point N be at a distance of 10 units from L and on right side of L.Let the co-ordinate of point M be x.

Co-ordinate of point L is -5.

Since, point M is to the left of point L.

∴ -5…….. x

∴ d(L, M) = -5 -x

∴ ………= -7 – x

∴ x = – 7 – 10

∴x = ………

ii. Let the co-ordinate of point N be y.

Co-ordinate of point L is -5.

Since, point N is to the right of point L.

∴ y …….. -5

∴ d(L,N) = y- (-5)

∴ 10 = y + ………

∴ 10 – 5 = y

∴ y = ………

∴ The co-ordinates of the points at a distance of 10 units from L are -15 and 1
