The horizontal force on the block is .981 N

Explanation:

static friction- Static friction is a force acting on a body which tends to move but stay at rest.

When a object has tendency of motion , A force resist this tendency of motion and this resistive force is static friction.

Once the object start moving ,kinetic friction start acting on the object and ground.

It is the tangential force that must be there to overcome the sliding of object.

F_{s} = \mu N

where \mu is coefficient of static friction and N is the normal reaction on the block due to ground surface.

A block of mass .25 kg is placed on a surface.

coefficient of static friction = .4

normal reaction N = mg (net force in vertical direction = 0)

F = \mu N

F = .4(.25)(9.81)

F = .981 N
