Explanation:Sisterhood in Rossetti’s “Goblin Market”
In the Victorian period, sisterhood was known as the friendship of women. The purpose of the sisterhood relationship was more than a biological relationship or a philanthropic group of women (Casey 65). In the nineteenth century, sisterhood evolved into a nurturing and supportive bond between two or more women. It promoted the wellbeing of the female gender sphere.
Sisterhood or female friendship was particularly important for women who were socially limited by Victorian society. This relationship challenged the patriarchal status quo and led to the woman question becoming a social issue in the mid nineteenth century. People who supported the women question argued that women could do more than their domestic role in the home. Middle-class and upper-class women were confined to the private sphere and controlled by their male relatives (Gleadle 51). Since women were unable to work or perform duties outside of the home, women’s social wellbeing was limited, though sisterhood offered women one much needed outlet.
