Mr. and Mrs. Slater symbolize the mindset of this materialistic society where wealth takes over the blood relations.

Both of them, ignoring the value of relations, are driven by gain they can have after Mrs. Slater's father's supposed death. They bring the bureau downstairs from their father's room, lest Jordans (Mrs. Slater's sister and her husband) would have an eye on them. Not only the bureau, they pinch the old man's clock and slippers. Besides, they are more concerned about the fact if the old man paid the premuim than to attend to his need. Both of them seem to be hasty in their decision as they didn't even bother to call the doctor to come and check on Mr. Merryweather.

However, Mr. Slater seems to be more conscientious than his wife as he was not pleased with the idea of shifting the bureau and pinching the slippers. Mrs. Slater is very keen on outdoing her sister's family who, she assumed, would not care for the mourning after hearing about the death of Mr. Merryweather. But Henry has no such competitive nature. The fact is that he is a henpecked husband who can be easily influenced by his wife.
