Rusting of iron happens only in the presence of water. It takes place at room temperature when iron reacts with oxygen to form a brown layer of Iron(III)Oxide, which is rust. ... The oxidation/hydration of iron is slightly exothermic and slow in air. If fact, heating small bits of iron red hot will not set them on fire.
