Answer
Tenant farmers were in a bad situation before freedom. While they performed all the hard work, the landlords would take away substantial amount of the produce. Also, due to this arrangement, there was no incentive for the farmer to enrich the soil through the use of fertilizers since the farmer could be evicted anytime from the land.
Even today, despite land reforms, there are many tenant farmers. Then there are farmers with very small landholdings. While there are large farmers who rule the roost, the small farmer is still in a pretty bad shape. With increase in input costs, subsistence farmers are in a bad shape. No wonder, many of them think that suicide is an easier option than to till the land.
