SIMILARITIES:

Both of the countries had problems within different communities. Leading to civil wars.

DIFFERENCES:

Belgium adopted power sharing and community govt policy, whle Sri Lanka adopted the policy of Majoritarionism.

Belgium gave chances to all community, bt in Slanka only the majority ruled.

Belgium sorted the problem efficiantly but in SrL the problem is growing day to day.

Belgium:-

  • The Belgium is a small country in Europe.
  • The borders of this country connect to the countries like Netherlands, Frances and Germany.
  • It has population about little over 1 crore.
  • The ethnic composition is complex.
  • The 59% of that speaking people live in flemish area where as the 40% of French speaking people living wallonia region.
  • The 1% of people in Belgium speak German.
  • The situation in the capital city Brussels is totally different from whole country.
  • In Brussels, 80% of the people speak French where as there are only 20% of the people who speak Dutch.
  • The minority of French were rich and powerful.
  • This resented did at speaking community to get the benefits of economic development and growth much later than the French speaking community.
  • This is why tension was created between both the communities in 1950s and 1960s.
  • The accommodation in Belgium helped to overcome this problem.

Sri-Lanka:-

  • Sri-Lanka is a small Island nation a few kilometres away from the southern coast of Indian nation.
  • It has population of over 2 crore people.
  • It has a diverse ethnic composition.
  • The major social community is of Sinhala speakers of about 74%.
  • The Tamils are about 18% from which 13% are Sri Lankan Tamils and the rest are Indian Tamil.
  • The Sri Lankan Tamils are mostly concentrated in the Northern and Eastern part of the country.
  • Sinhalas are mostly found to be Buddhist, where as Tamils are found to be Hindus or muslims. There is also a 7% population of Christians who are both Tamil and Sinhalas.
  • The Sri lanka emerged independent in 1948 after which the Sinhala community tried to take dominance over the country.
  • The government hence adopted majorities and establish Sinhala as the the official language.
  • In 1956, a law was passed which maids in the official language. Further, Buddhism was made the official religion and the sellers were favoured to get university positions and government jobs.
  • These laws and government measures made the Tamil specially the Sri Lankan Tamils feel alienated, and hence they launched many parties and struggles which was ignored.
  • At last to demand what they wanted they started making political organisations and even demanding for an independent Tamil state in Northern and Eastern part of the Sri Lankan nation.
  • Thus it resulted in civil war and the death of thousands of people of both the communities.
