Subject-centred approach

Ralph Tyler laid out the subject-centred curriculum in his seminal book, Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction in 1949. It is also known as the knowledge-centred curriculum. It is a traditional model. It is the most commonly used method of instruction.

Advantages

1. This method focuses on one subject at a time.

2. It enables the student to study the subject in which he is interested.

Disadvantages

1. This method does not engage the students.

2. No effort is made to integrate the knowledge gained in different subjects.

Competency based approach

Competency based training and education is used in learning concrete skills instead of abstract learning. Competency based learning refers to systems of instruction, assessment, grading, and academic reporting which are based on the students' demonstration that they have learned the skills and acquired the knowledge that they are expected to learn during the course of their education.

Advantages

1. It is very beneficial for independent and adult learners. The students can work at their own pace to demonstrate mastery of a subject.

2. It is flexible and depends on the individual learner.

Disadvantages

1. The student's focus is on the assessment instead of completing the assignments.

2. This method does not work well with all learning environments.
