Explanation:

Whether you should or not depends on who the elders are, how old you are and what they are telling you to do or not do. It is not a simple yes or no.

If you are a child or a teenager, you should realize that older people have been there much longer and their advice can be valuable. You can learn from your own mistakes and you should. But why not avoid making them in the first place by listening to people who have been there. Be grateful that you have the resource.

Now if you are an adult, have your life under control, are financially independent, and making good choices, you do not have to obey anyone just because they are older, even your parents. You should listen and consider the advice you get but not obey blindly. My mother believed I should obey her every order even at age 30, including which relatives I should be nice to and which ones I should ignore. I did not and today, 36 years after she is gone, I am glad I did not. The very people she wanted me to be cold to (for ridiculous reasons) have been my biggest support through a time of serious downturns in my life.

Our society insists that older people know the best especially parents. And we owe them blind obedience. To that I say, it is BS. They are as fallible as anyone else. My parents were wonderful people but they were not smarter than me and were bogged down by tradition.

So, keep an open mind. Listen and follow advice when needed. But you do not need to be “Yours obediently”. That was pre-1947 and today it is totally new world.
