The case is somehow different in this.
Here, Aluminium oxide acts as an acid which reacts with Sodium hydroxide(a base) and neutralises it.
The result of neutralisation reaction is that a salt of metal alongwith water are formed.
Here, Sodium's salt is formed and is known as Sodium Aluminate.
Though Both of the elements being metallic(positive) in nature, they form the salt due to the indulgence of oxygen in between them.
Oxygen partly combines with aluminium to form aluminate ion(Negative ion or anion) and not aluminium oxide.
So, it reacts with the sodium ion(Cation) and forms the salt Sodium Aluminate.
