Fluoroethane cannot be directly prepared by fluorination of ethane. Direct fluorination of ethane is a very vigrous reaction which can't be controlled. So , first ethane is converted into chloroethane which is followed by heating with inorganic fluoride results un the formation of fluoroethane.

Conversion is given below :

Ethane can be converted into chloroethane in the following manner:

C2H6 Ethane+ Cl2 −→−−−Sunlight C2H5ClChloroethane + HCl

Cloroethane on reaction with HgCl​2 gives fluoroethane.

2CH3CH2Cl + Hg2F2 → 2CH3CH2F + Hg2F2
