Copper( I ) is not known to exist in aqueous solution because Copper( I ) instantly decomposes into free copper and copper(II) ion. This is because copper(II) is more stable than copper(I) in aqueous solution the driving energy for this reaction is given by the high hydration enthalpy of copper(II) ion.
