Pure substances have definite composition and not variable composition. Compounds and elements are pure substances as they have definite and uniform composition (unlike mixtures which consist of many components in any ratio).

An element is a pure substance which consists of only one kind of particles – either atoms or molecules of same type of atoms. Copper, silver, Hydrogen, Sulphur are some examples of elements.

A compound is a pure substance which contains atoms of two or more different elements. Examples include Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, glucose etc.Pure substances have characteristic physical properties such melting point and boiling points. For example water boils at 100 degree Celsius, ice melts at 0 degree Celsius.
