Democracy is defined as government for the people, by the people and of the people where there is coexistence of ideas.
India as democratic state
1)Free and fair election- election commission responsible
2) Universal adult suffrage and each vote has equal value conferred by Indian constitution
3)Final decision making authority directly elected by the people.
4)Government of India works within limits set by constitution and citizen's right and 3 tier system to have checks and balances.
5) Recognization of fundamental rights of citizens of India.
6)RTI acts , right to constitutional remedy safeguard and provide equal opportunities to all citizens.
7) have foundations of liberty and equality in terms of providing social welfare schemes
Recent incidents where the democracy of India seems to be in danger
1) Religious polarization- superiority of one religion over other and forceful conversion eg. Ghar wapsi , hindu muslim riots
2) Violation of rights of minorities- in terms of race (North East discrimination), in terms of caste where increasing cases of violence against dalits in Gujarat ,UP ,Rajasthan etc, against transgenders resulting in exculsion ofcertain communities over other curbing individual rights.
