There is no difference in crossing over and cross over. Both are the same thing.
Crossing over is changing of segments of genetic material between two non-sister chromatids forming two recombinant chromosome. It occurs in sexual reproduction. Crossing over occurs prophase and metaphase of meiosis. It also occurs in mitosis which results of heterozygosity. Crossing over is necessary during meiosis for normal segregation of chromosomes.
