Cud is the name given to the food of ruminants which is swallowed and partially digested.

  • Ruminants such as cows graze on grass and directly swallow it.
  • Certain enzymatic secretions during the passage and in the stomach partially digest the food.
  • This food is now called Cud.
  • It returns back to the mouth for the cow to chew it properly and then digest it fully.
  • Ruminants consist of a four-chambered stomach which is named Rumen, Reticulum, omasum, and abomasum respectively.
  • Mostly the food returns from the first stomach called Rumen.
