Mountains are usually very steep. While climbing mountains , our body goes up against the gravitational pull of earth. For this our muscles need to take extra strain and hence more energy is spent.
Besides due to high latitudes , the air is comparatively thin , so the body doesn't get enough oxygen.
This fact too is partly responsible for mountaining to take up a lot of energy.
