When a matter is placed in an electromagnetic field, force experienced by the matter is called as the charge.

It is the one of the physical properties of matter. SI unit of charge or electrical charge or electrostatic charge is Coulomb or C.

The rate of flow of charges is called as current.

Charge

Charge is an intrinsic property of matter ,due to which force of attraction ,or repulsion can be experienced.

⇒There are two types of charges :

  1. Positive charge
  2. Negative charge

⇒ the magnitude of elementary positive charge or negative charge is same and equal to  1.6  × 10{}^{ -19}

⇒SI unit of charge is ampere second or coulomb (C).

⇒CGS unit of charge is esu.

Properties of charge :

  1. charges is a scalar quantity.
  2. charges associated with mass.
  3. Charge is quantised , it is an integral multiple of smallest charge . q = ne , n =0,1,2 ....
  4. Accelerated charge radiates energy.
  5. similar charges repel and opposite charges attract .
  6. Charge is conserved .
