Definition of conjugation with reference to ciliates :

  • Conjugation refers to the mode of sexual reproduction which occurs mostly in organisms such as bacteria, cilia etc.
  • When conjugation occurs between two ciliates which have different matting processes, it is called as conjugation in ciliates.
  • As a result of such type of conjugation, the exchange of nuclear material takes place between two species involved in matting.
  • Such type of conjugation is seen in paramecium and Vorticella.
