Definition and energy are given below -

The definition of electron volt in simple terms is - energy gained or lost by an electron when it accelerates from rest through potential difference of one volt in vacuum. 1 eV or electron volt = 1.6*10-¹⁹ Joules.

The definition of atomic mass unit is - "mass equal to one twelfth or (1/12) the mass of atom of carbon-12." Carbon 12 is an isotope of carbon containing six neutrons and protons.

Given - Mass of proton - 1.6726 x 10-²⁷ kg.

Speed of light - 3*10⁸ m/s²

Find - Energy in joules.

Solution - Energy of one proton can be calculated by the famous equation E = m*c² where E is energy, m is mass and c is speed of light.

Keeping the values in equation-

E = 1.6726*10-²⁷ * (3*10⁸)²

E = 1.5*10-¹⁰ Joules.
