Endoplasmic Reticulum

They're the enormous flattened sacs of membranous tissues seen in a eukaryotic cell's cytoplasm (cells possess a defined nucleus in an organism ). The Endoplasmic reticulum contains ribosomes, which are responsible for protein synthesis.

Functions of ER

  • Helps in the synthesis of essential lipids and carbohydrates.
  • Produce and transportation proteins.
  • Storage of Calcium.

Endoplasmic Reticulum can be divided into two on the basis of its physical and functional characteristics,

  1. Rough endoplasmic reticulum
  2. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
