Answer :-

In general terms, the mechanical substitution of the functions of the Kindneys, is termed as Haemodialysis.

The mechanism of Haemodialysis is as follows :-

  • Haemodialysis machine (artificial kidney) works according to the same principle as the real kidneys.

  • The blood of the patient is pumped out of the body and is filtered to remove the waste products. This process is termed as "Dialysis".

  • The lower part of the arm or leg of the patient is connected to the machine by inserting a "Catheter" into an artery.

  • The blood is gently pumped out of the artery and is returned to the vein.

  • "Heparin" is added to the blood to prevent clotting during the process.

  • The blood circulates slowly through the dialysis tubing which is artificial and partially permeable in nature.

  • Exchange between the blood and the dialysing solution continues until an equilibrium is reached.

  • Haemodialysis removes waste products such as Urea and excess of Sodium and Potassium from the blood.

  • Haemodialysis takes about 6 to 8 hours and is usually done atleast twice a week.
