NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Hormones are non-nutrient chemicals which act as intercellular messengers and are produced in trace amounts.

Types of hormones:

Peptides and proteins:

 These hormones consist of small or long chains of amino acids.

 Like other cellular proteins, these are synthesized on rough endoplasmic reticulum.

 E.g., Insulin, glucagon, Pituitary hormones, hypothalamic hormones etc.   Biogenic amines:

 These are synthesized by modifying amino acid tyrosine.

 E.g., Iodothyronines (thyroid hormones), Catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine).

Steroids:

 These are lipids that are derived from cholesterol.

 These are synthesized on smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

 E.g., Androgens (male sex hormone), estrogens and progesterone (female sex hormones), aldosterone and cortisol (hormones of adrenal cortex).
