In this age of distractions and stress, inner serenity is a lost art. Most people spend their lives on auto-pilot, going about daily routines with mechanical precision. To truly live, one has to be at peace and find serenity with life and circumstances.
Be Comfortable In Your Own Skin:It does not matter what others are doing, achieving, earning, building or eating. Yet thinking about that and comparing ourselves with the Jones’ next door takes up 99% or our time and energy. We are all unique individuals and so our needs are unique too. What might be best for someone else may not work for us. So, learning to be content, while continuing to perform our duties in life is a way to find inner peace.
Have A Feeling of “I Heart Me — No Matter What” and An Attitude of Live and Let Live: Competition is healthy but only in the proper doses. If it leads to motivating you more to realise your full potential or enhance excellence in work — competitive rivalry and an inner drive are fruitful. However, once it crosses this fence to become a malicious tug of war with others, an attitude of ‘survival of the fittest’ and getting ahead ‘at any cost’, competition becomes a primitive, animalistic burden that can never breed anything except more unrest and insecurity in an individual. Never dwell on hurtful words someone has said. Once you start remembering them, shut this tendency down by closing your eyes and saying “I Heart Me — no matter what” to yourself. With time and practice, other peoples’ negativity will not taint your self-belief. An attitude of tolerance to others, cheerful self-assurance towards every situation, the ability to allow others to practice their way of life while we live our own — foster peace more.
Practice The Inner Smile: The heart is the repository of our emotions. But only one quality of emotions can co-exist at a time in our hearts. If hate, disquiet, displeasure and intolerance reign supreme, there is no place for love and happiness. But only when the heart is filled with love, contentment and acceptance, can the inner frown be replaced with the inner smile. Everyday on waking up practice feeling such joy, gratitude and love within you that your heart blossoms into a beaming inner smile, that reflects upon your lips.
Take Care of The Physical Self: A body wracked with disease and pain can make emotional stability and peace a challenging proposition for a majority of us. So some form of exercise, outdoor play, yoga or breath work can keep the body comfortable and free of calamity.
Find An Inner Oasis of Bliss and Peace, Meditatively: This is a desirable way to establish your inner senses in an aura of peace and serenity. However, true meditation is near impossible to achieve in the absence of the above four ideas. If the body is sick, the mind will dwell on sickness as soon as the windows of the eyes are shut. If thoughts are barbed with feelings of jealousy, worry or insecurity, the mind cannot become quiet and meditative — and if the heart is unhappy and unloved, inner peace is but a distant dream. Therefore meditation is the final piece of the puzzle on how to be more peaceful and the picture is complete only when all five parts come together harmoniously.
