the cross breeding of two species to form a sngle specie is called hybridization and the specie is called hybrid

hybridisation is intermixing of two orbitals of nearly same energy to new hybrid orbital and occurs among orbitals of same atom. Any type of orbital like s  p or d can participate in hybridisation. It is the process just before overlapping and bonds are formed after hybridisation.
Consider the electron configuration of carbon before hybridization (ground state configuration) C:[He]2s22px12py12pz0. This configuration has the 2s orbital full with paired electrons at one energy level (which can NOT accept additional electrons for bonding) and two 2p orbitals at another energy level with paramagnetic electrons. The geometry of the ground state orbitals would not accommodate addition of 4 Hydrogen atoms.
electrons must undergo hybridization (change) in order to become paramagnetic and accommodate pairing of electrons forming a covalent bond.

the hybridisaton of PCl5 is sp3d and of BeF2 is sp
