The process of intake of nutrients and its utilization by an organism is called NUTRITION. The organisms are mainly moulded into two categories - Autotrophs and Heterotrophs. Organisms who prepare their own food are called Autotrophs. Green Plants are Autotrophs because they have chlorophyll inside them which helps in preparing their own food by using Sunlight, Carbon Dioxide and Water. This process is called Photosynthesis. They take in Carbon dioxide and water and convert them in to carbohydrates (glucose, the energy providing fuel) in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight. Photosynthesis cant happen in absence of Carbon Dioxide. But, some plants like mushrooms and fungi and yeast lack the presence of chlrophyll in them. Therefore, they cant prepare their own food. They break their food into simpler substances and then absorb it. Such organisms are called Heterotrophs. Human and Mushrooms and fungi and yeast belong this to this category. Organisms which depend on other organisms are called heterotrophic organsims. The difference is that, Autotrophic organisms prepare their own food with photosynthesis... while Heterotrophic organisms depend on other organisms for nutrition. they break down either inside or outside their body and then absorb it.
