An oxidizing agent is a substance which undergoes reduction( loses oxygen) and helps the other substance oxidize. A reducing agent is an agent which undergoes oxidation(gains oxygen) and helps other substance reduce.
Examples:
MnO4 +SO3 = Mn2 + SO4
manganese oxide is the oxidizing agent whereas sulphur tri oxide is a reducing agent.
