plasmid is a small, circular, double-stranded DNA molecule that is distinct from a cell's chromosomal DNA.Plasmids naturally exist in bacterial cells, and they also occur in some eukaryotes. Often, the genes carried inplasmids provide bacteria with genetic advantages, such as antibiotic resistance.

A plasmid is a small DNA molecule which is generally used to separate from the chromosomal DNA and that can replicate or copy itself freely.

It was first introduced in 1952 by the American biologist.

It's utility was first reported by the chance of linking a gene encoding antibiotics resistance with a native plasmid of salmonella typhimurium. The antibiotics resistance gene by cutting out a piece of DNA from plasmid is responsible for confering antibiotic resistance.
