Power is a measurement of amount of work done in a given amount of time. In the International System of Units (SI) the unit of power is 1 joule per second. This is called a watt in honor of James Watt, a 19th century inventor and developer of the steam engine condenser.

Another, more traditional unit of power is the horsepower. Roughly the power of 1 horse. Engineers have a more precise way to calculate horsepower as well.

Power is calculated thusly: Power = work/time.
