===VALENCY ====
Valency is the combining capacity of an element.
◾It is numerically equal to the number of hydrogen atoms that combine with an element.
Example - In methane, four atoms of hydrogen combines with carbon so its Valency is four.
◾It is also numerically equal to the number of chlorine atoms that combine with the atoms of an element.
Example - In magnesium chloride, two atoms of chlorine combines with magnesium so it's Valency is two.
✔️Valency of metals and non-metals
➡️Valency of metal - The number of elections lost by an atom during formation of compound.
➡️Valency of non - metals - The number of electrons gained by an atom during formation of compound.
◾Variable Valency ◾
Some elements show more than one value of Valency in different compounds. These elements are said to possess variable Valency.
For example - In FeO, Valency of Fe = 2.
