metacentric chromosome are x-shaped chromosome which have the centromere in the center such that both sections are of equal length. human chromosome 1,3,16,19 and 20 are metacentric. the function of a metacentric chromosome is similar to that of a chromosome. it contains hereditary information in the form of genes which are passed on from the parent to the offspring.
