Energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position is called potential energy.

Derivation:

Let us consider a body of mass m raised from the ground to the height h, the amount of work done against gravity is

W = F x h

But, F = mg, the weight of the body.

So, W = mgh

Derivation of potential energy

Explanation:

Potential energy is the energy possessed by the body by virtue of its position or configuration .

The energy protected / stored by an object due to its position relative to other objects , stresses/ saves within itself , its electric charge or other factors like energy .

        Consider a body of mass m at a height 'h' from the ground .

        The amount of work done to raise this body to this height h against the force of gravity .

          W = F × h        where F is the  FORCE OF GRAVITY .

       W = m g h .
