Newton's first law of motion - sometimes referred to as the lawof inertia. An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motionstays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Third, First Law of ... The tendency of a body in motion continues to remain in motion, moving with a uniform velocity and a body at rest continues to remain at rest unless acted upon by a force. This tendency of the body is known as 'inertia' (i.e. resistance to change). In Newton's First Law of Motion, this concept is quantified.
