See it's an active transport.

In active transport energy is required, ATP hydrolysis takes place in this process.
Na+ K+- ATPase enzyme is responsible for this energy utilisation process.

Sodium potassium pump is associated with this active transportation, in which sodium and potassium ions are transported across the plasma membrane.

This process is responsible for maintaining the large excess of K+ on the inside and maintaining the large excess of Na+ outside.

Transport process is shown in figure, at one time the transport of 3 Na+ ions outside the cell and 2 K+ ions inside the cell that transported across the plasma membrane.

This unbalanced charge transfer contributes to the charge separation across the membrane.

The sodium-potassium pump is the most important contributor to the action potential produced by the nerve cell.

It is called p-type pump because ATP interaction phosphorylates the transport protein and change its conformation.

Note : Refer a figure.

Hope it's useful for you.

All the best.
