Answer: When no-metallic oxide for, example SO2 (non- metal) is dissolved in water it produces sulphurous acid which is acidic in nature.

SO2 + H2O → H2SO3

When metallic oxide (metal) reacts with water it produces metal hydroxides that are basic in nature

Na2O + H2O → 2NaOH

Explanation: You can check the nature by using a litmus paper. In the case of sulphurous acid, the blue litmus turns red indicating that it is acid.
